Photos from the Marjorie Mazia School of Dance

Hi friends,

Recently, my mother (Nora Guthrie) brought boxes of photographs from the Marjorie Mazia School of Dance into the office, so that we could start scanning and organizing all of them. The photos are so beautiful, young dancers learning to express themselves through creative movement.

Did you study at Marjorie’s dance school? We’re hoping to be able to share some photos, perhaps you will recognize yourself and your classmates? Stay tuned…

Hi- Allen Tobias sent me an email about your project. I was a student of your grandmother’s and your mom’s. I adored them both! I would love to connect with you for your project. I have a few anecdotes for you as well.

I was a student of your grandmother’s at the Marjorie Mazia School of Dance. No matter how talented (or not), I fondly remember how she made each of us feel special and that we were all capable of accomplishing great things. She taught me to love my body and the joy and freedom of movement. Thank you to your mom and uncles for sharing her with us. I vividly remember your Uncle Arlo coming to the studio and sitting on a bench doing his homework while classes were going on.

Hi. I was a dance and drama student at your grandmother’s school from 1965-1968. I took classes with several instructors, including your grandmother. She was strict and had high expectations, and we all worked extra hard to please her. I also remember Arlo waiting for her in the outer room. It was the first time I saw a 16-string guitar (which he was practicing while he waited).

Fern, Did we dance together in Marjorie’s American in Paris at the school? And in hundreds of classes?

Marjorie was my first modern teacher when I was 3 years old! I was born in Sheepshead Bay, then moved to Long Island when I was 6 – but I actually have some memories of taking class with her. I am pretty sure I remember doing prances across the floor. I danced professionally with the Erick Hawkins Dance Company in the 70’s, then moved to Kalamazoo, MI to form my own dance company called Wellspring/Cori Terry & Dancers. We just celebrated our 43rd year! By the way, I remember Nora too – saw her perform at Stony Brook!

    Shana tovah Nora!

On this first day of our New Year I read an ling-kept article on Arlo Gutherie’s 2004 concert at LA’s Disney Hall in the Jewish Journal.

I am a dancer-choreographer who danced in Donald McKayle’s LA-based company, and then later, as a member of Los Angeles Dance Theater. It wad with LADT that I had the great fortune to be chosen to dance Sophie Maslow’s “Dust Bowl Ballads,” music by Woody Gutherie. And the life dance goes on and on. Thank you for keeping this site available for all of us!

Good tidings and sweet blessings for a happy New Year!
